The short answer

In China, food delivery isn't a luxury — it's infrastructure. Meituan (美团) and Ele.me (饿了么) deliver everything from ¥15 noodle bowls to bubble tea to pharmacy runs, usually in 30 minutes, with fees around ¥3–8. If you can order lunch in China, you can live in China.

Get set up

  1. Download 美团 and 饿了么. Both have mini-programs inside Alipay and WeChat too, so you can skip the standalone apps — but the apps have better coupons.
  2. Log in with your phone number (foreign numbers usually work for SMS codes) and set your delivery address precisely: compound name (小区), building (栋/号楼), unit and room. Chinese addresses go largest-to-smallest: city → district → road → compound → building → room.
  3. Add a payment method. Alipay/WeChat Pay with your linked foreign card works for delivery orders.
  4. Grab first-order coupons. Both apps shower new users with 首单减 (first-order discounts) and daily 红包 (coupon packs) — check the app's coupon center (领券中心) before every order. Never pay full price in week one.

Order smart

  • 拼单 (group ordering): ordering with colleagues? Use 拼单 so everyone adds dishes to one order — one delivery fee, and the group often unlocks满减 (spend-X-save-Y) thresholds.
  • 满减 math: a "满30减15" deal means ¥15 off orders over ¥30. Two ¥18 dishes beat one ¥25 dish.
  • Delivery to offices and compounds: riders can't enter most office buildings or gated compounds — you'll get a call (in Chinese) to meet at the gate or lobby. Save your building's pickup spot after the first order. Having your phone number reachable matters more than perfect Chinese.
  • No tipping, ever. Delivery fees and rider pay are baked into the system. Don't tip — it confuses everyone.
  • Scheduled delivery: use 预约送达 to schedule lunch during meetings;准时宝 (on-time insurance, ~¥1) refunds you if it's late.

Beyond food

Both apps deliver far more than meals: medicine from pharmacies (30-min), flowers, groceries (美团买菜 / 小象超市), documents printed at nearby shops, even phone chargers. When you're sick in bed, the pharmacy delivery alone justifies the setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use food delivery without speaking Chinese?

Mostly yes. The apps are Chinese-only, but dish photos carry you far, and machine translation on menu pages is decent. The one hard part is the rider's phone call — save a text template in Chinese ("我在小区门口等你" = I'll wait at the compound gate) and send it when they call.

Is the food safe?

Stick to high-rating, high-order-count shops (look for 月售 thousands and ratings 4.7+). The platforms' food-safety record is comparable to dine-in; avoid rock-bottom prices that look too good to be true.

Can I get delivery to a hotel?

Yes — put the hotel name and room number in the address, and meet the rider in the lobby. Most hotels are used to it.
