Mexico eSIM and Phone Data Guide (2026)
Going to Mexico? Buy a travel eSIM before you fly — landing at MEX or Cancún with live data means an Uber that actually finds you, Google Maps for the hotel, and WhatsApp contact with your host from minute one. For short trips, prepaid travel eSIMs from Airalo, Holafly or Nomad are the easiest path. For longer stays, Mexican prepaid ("prepago") is famously cheap — Telcel, AT&T México and Movistar sell generous packages for a few dollars a month, and you can buy a local SIM at any OXXO.
Why buy before you land
- Leaving the airport — rideshare pickup areas at MEX and CUN are chaotic; live data beats the airport Wi-Fi that hundreds of passengers are hammering.
- WhatsApp is life in Mexico — hotels, tour operators, restaurants and landlords all communicate on WhatsApp. Get on it before you clear customs.
- Navigation and translation — Google Maps offline helps, but live traffic in CDMX and real-time translation need data.
- Verification codes — banking apps trigger SMS 2FA on first login from Mexico; keep your home SIM reachable via Wi-Fi calling over the eSIM's data.
- Skip the airport markup — SIM vendors at the airport charge several times the OXXO price for the same Telcel or AT&T SIM.
eSIM providers compared: Airalo vs Holafly vs Nomad
Airalo covers 200+ countries and regions with Local, Regional and Global (Discover) tiers. Mexico local plans start at $4.00 for 1GB; validity runs 3 days to 365 days. Some destinations offer unlimited plans (3GB of high-speed data per 24 hours, then throttled to 1Mbps). The Discover+ line includes a US phone number with calls and SMS; most other Airalo plans are data-only. Buy and install in the Airalo app; the eSIM connects when you land.
Holafly charges per day for unlimited data rather than per gigabyte (US pricing is public: about $27.50 for 7 days, about $73.90 for 30 days; Mexico per-day pricing is in a similar range). Monthly plans — Unlimited around $64.90/month and Light 25GB around $49.90/month — can be cancelled anytime. Hotspot sharing is included. Coverage is 160–200+ destinations.
Nomad is another travel eSIM data provider to compare on price for Mexico plans — check current per-GB rates on their site before buying.
For Mexico, travel eSIMs typically ride on the Telcel network, which has the best national coverage.
eSIM vs a local physical SIM
- Trips under ~2 weeks: a travel eSIM is simplest — no store visit, no Spanish-language activation menus.
- Longer stays: a local SIM is dramatically cheaper. Mexican prepaid packages give you unlimited calls/SMS across Mexico, the US and Canada plus gigabytes of data for roughly $100–300 MXN ($5–17 USD) per month. At those prices, a travel eSIM stops making sense after the first week or two.
- Middle path: travel eSIM for landing day, then buy a Telcel or AT&T SIM at an OXXO or carrier store on day one or two and move to the cheap local package.
Mexican carriers and visitor plans
- Telcel — Mexico's largest network, best coverage including rural areas. Prepaid brand is Amigo: packages ("Paquetes Amigo Sin Límite") include unlimited minutes and SMS in Mexico/US/Canada plus a data allowance and unlimited social apps. Examples from the official lineup: Amigo Sin Límite 100 ($100 MXN / 15 days / 1.5GB), 200 ($200 MXN / 30 days / ~3GB), 300 ($300 MXN / 30 days / ~4GB), 500 ($500 MXN / 30 days / ~6GB). Activate by texting the package code (e.g. SL100) to 5050; recharging the exact package amount usually activates it automatically. Telcel also supports eSIM activation for compatible phones.
- AT&T México — strong in cities. Prepaid recharges ("recargas") from $10 MXN (200MB / 1 day) to $300 MXN (18GB / 30 days); the sweet spot is often the $200 MXN recharge (12GB / 30 days) with unlimited calls/SMS to Mexico, the US and Canada.
- Movistar — the budget challenger. Prepaid recharges around $100 MXN for 10GB / 30 days are common in current promotions.
- Where to buy: OXXO convenience stores (everywhere), carrier stores in malls, airport kiosks (pricier). Top-ups ("recargas") are sold at OXXO counters and online. Since January 2026 Mexico requires every prepaid line to be registered — visitors register with a valid passport at activation (done in the carrier's store or app); unregistered lines are suspended.
Phone compatibility and dual-SIM setup
- eSIM-capable phones: iPhone XS / XR and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, most Samsung Galaxy S20 series and later, plus many recent Motorola/OnePlus flagships. Check with `*#06#` — an EID number means eSIM is supported.
- The phone must be carrier-unlocked.
- Dual-SIM setup: set the travel eSIM (or later the Telcel line) as the "Cellular Data" line with Data Roaming ON — travel eSIMs need roaming enabled to connect. Keep your home SIM with data roaming OFF for calls/SMS only.
- Enable Wi-Fi calling on your home line so bank SMS codes arrive over data at no roaming cost.
Frequently asked questions
Is WhatsApp really that important in Mexico?
Yes. Hotels, Airbnb hosts, tour guides, restaurants and even some businesses run customer service on WhatsApp. Telcel's Amigo packages include unlimited WhatsApp data, and a travel eSIM gets you on it from landing.
Can I buy a Mexican SIM at the airport?
Yes, but you'll pay a premium. For the best price, buy a Telcel or AT&T SIM at an OXXO or carrier store in town and recharge the exact package amount to auto-activate it.
Do I need ID or a tax number to buy a SIM in Mexico?
Prepaid SIM purchase in Mexico now requires registration: bring your passport. Since January 2026 every prepaid line must be registered to an ID holder (passport for visitors) at activation, or the line is suspended.
I recharged at OXXO but got the wrong package. What happened?
The package is triggered by the exact recharge amount — recharge $100 MXN and you get the $100 package. Recharge a different amount and you may get pay-as-you-go credit instead. Always confirm the amount matches the package you want.
How much data do I need?
Light use (maps, WhatsApp, email): 2–4GB for two weeks. Heavy use (video, hotspot): 10GB+. Local prepaid makes heavy use cheap; on a travel eSIM, size up or pick a per-day unlimited plan.
My bank's SMS code never arrives. Why?
Travel eSIMs are data-only with no phone number. Keep your home SIM active (dual-SIM or Wi-Fi calling) to receive codes over the eSIM's data connection.
