The short answer

Australia's public health system, Medicare, is mostly for citizens and permanent residents. If you're on a temporary visa — a 482 worker, a 485 graduate, a 417 working holiday maker — your visa likely carries condition 8501, which requires you to maintain adequate health insurance for your entire stay. Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) is the product built for exactly this. (Students use the sibling product, OSHC; this article is about OVHC for workers and other temporary visa holders.)

Who must have it

Condition 8501 appears on most temporary work visas: 482 (Skills in Demand), 485 (Temporary Graduate), 407 (Training), 403 (Temporary Work), and often on 417/462 working holiday visas. If 8501 is on your visa grant letter, OVHC (or equivalent adequate cover) is legally mandatory — and it must cover you from arrival, not from when you get around to it. A lapse in cover can lead to visa cancellation. Even where 8501 doesn't apply (some visitor streams), the government strongly recommends cover — without it you're personally liable for the full cost of any treatment.

What "adequate" means

The Department of Home Affairs doesn't prescribe a specific policy, but the policy must be OVHC issued by an Australian-registered private health insurer and must cover the full visa period, including all secondary applicants (partner, children). Travel insurance from your home country generally does not satisfy condition 8501 for working visas. Look for the insurer's statement that the product "meets visa condition 8501" — compliant products say so explicitly.

What OVHC covers (and doesn't)

Typical OVHC tiers:

TierWhat it usually includesIndicative cost
Basic / hospital-onlyIn-hospital treatment as a private patient, some ambulance~AUD 50–150/month
Mid / standardAbove + GP visits, some out-of-hospital medical~AUD 90–220/month
Comprehensive / topAbove + specialists, prescription medicines, extras (dental, optical, physio)~AUD 150–380+/month

Exact prices depend on visa type, single vs family cover, and excess (deductible — commonly AUD 500). Note what's typically limited or excluded: pre-existing conditions often have waiting periods (commonly 12 months), pregnancy/birth may have waiting periods too, and extras like dental are capped annually. Read the product disclosure statement — the cheap policy that excludes what you actually need is the most expensive mistake.

Where to buy it

Buy from an Australian-registered health fund — the big OVHC issuers include Allianz Care, Bupa, HCF, nib, and Westfund, among others. You can buy before you arrive (recommended — you need proof of cover for the visa process and your cover should start on arrival day). Comparison sites and migration agents resell the same underlying products, sometimes with different pricing — compare the policy wording, not just the monthly figure.

Practical tips

  • Start date matters. Align the policy start date with your arrival date or visa grant date (whichever the insurer uses) — a gap at the beginning is still a breach of 8501.
  • Family cover. If your partner/children are on your visa, they need cover too — family policies are usually cheaper than separate singles.
  • Keep the certificate. You'll need the Certificate of Insurance for visa applications and possibly for employers.
  • Switching. You can switch funds mid-stay; waiting periods already served for equivalent cover usually transfer, but confirm in writing.
  • Leaving Australia. Cover ends on departure — but if you return on the same visa, you need continuous cover across the trip. Don't cancel for a two-week holiday home.

Frequently asked questions

Is OVHC the same as travel insurance?

No. Travel insurance covers short trips and emergencies; OVHC is ongoing health cover designed for a months-to-years stay, and it's the product the visa condition recognises.

Can I use Medicare instead?

Only if you're eligible — generally citizens, permanent residents, and citizens of countries with reciprocal agreements (for limited care). Most temporary workers are not eligible. Our companion article on Medicare eligibility explains the boundaries.

What happens if my cover lapses?

You're in breach of condition 8501, which can lead to visa cancellation. Set up direct debit and calendar reminders — an expired card is the classic cause.

Does OVHC cover dental?

Basic tiers generally don't. Mid and top tiers may include limited dental under "extras" with annual caps and waiting periods. Check the extras schedule, not the marketing headline.

I'm on a 417 working holiday visa — do I need it?

Only if condition 8501 is on your grant letter — but it frequently is, and even when it isn't, a single hospital visit without cover can cost more than years of premiums.
